At just 14, Johnny Manuel — known then as “Little Johnny” — was a signed recording artist, opening for major stars and living out a dream. Then his label dropped him, and he found himself back home, his career seemingly over before it began.
Years later, he walked onto the America’s Got Talent Season 12 stage for a shot at reclaiming that dream. Before singing a note, he told the judges how disappointed he’d been as a kid, believing he was destined to “take off and see the stars” — and how badly he wanted this new beginning to prove he could finally be himself.
Then came the performance. Manuel chose Whitney Houston’s powerhouse ballad “I Have Nothing,” a song that leaves nowhere to hide vocally, and delivered it with striking control and emotional depth. His voice built steadily through the verses before soaring into the song’s signature key change, drawing the crowd to its feet mid-performance. It was the kind of audition that silences a room — big, technically precise, and clearly personal.
The panel was unanimous. All four judges said yes, sending Manuel through to the Judge Cuts round, where his AGT journey would reach an even bigger moment days later.
Manuel went on to perform in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals but didn’t advance to the finals. Still, his AGT run wasn’t the end of his story: he later represented Bulgaria at Eurovision 2018 with the group Equinox, and made a viral, four-chair-turning appearance on The Voice Australia.
From child star to comeback story, Johnny Manuel proved that a false start doesn’t have to be the final word.
