Rescuers discover the only known albino orangutan on the planet and construct an island for her protection. Click below to see how the creature lives now

Alba is the world’s only known albino orangutan, making her very unique. She is so unique that she will be given her own protected tropical island. In April 2017, the albino orangutan was saved thanks to a joint effort by the BOS Foundation and the Central Kalimantan Natural Resource Conservation Agency in Indonesia.

Alba gained worldwide recognition as photographs of her went viral, and more and more people wanted to help her have the greatest life possible. The group that saved Alba came up with a clever plan to keep her safe, taking advantage of all the attention she has been getting.

Alba’s albinism renders her more prone to acquiring health issues such as impaired vision and even skin problems. Furthermore, since she stands out, she is more prone to becoming a victim of poachers. To ensure her safety, the rescuers decided to construct her own island. She shares the 10-hectare special island with Radmala (a 4-year-old female), Kika (a 6-year-old female), and Unyu (a 4-year-old male). Alba’s dearest buddies are these three orangutans. And they expressed their liking and affection for one another from the minute they met Alba. They now have the opportunity to spend their days together in the protected forest.

The island is monitored 24 hours a day, and personnel patrol it on a regular basis. They gather information about the orangutans’ health and behavior. There is a canal that acts as the island’s natural boundary, as well as two feeding platforms where supplemental food will be delivered twice daily.

Alba may have a long, healthy, and happy life free of human hazards thanks to the incredible work of the BOS Foundation!
