Cyndi Lauper, known for her 1983 hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” has captivated audiences with her unique style and joyful spirit. Her quirky personality, vibrant fashion, and colorful hair have made her a symbol of individuality and self-expression.
However, behind her upbeat exterior, Lauper has struggled with psoriasis, a chronic and incurable skin condition, since her diagnosis in 2010.
The condition, which causes painful, itchy patches on the skin, has sometimes been so severe that it felt like “boiling water” was poured on her.
Psoriasis affects around 8 million people in the U.S. and 125 million worldwide. Lauper initially thought her scalp issues were from frequent hair coloring, but they were actually symptoms of psoriasis.
The persistent discomfort took a toll on her both physically and emotionally.
Despite these challenges, Lauper channeled her experiences into creating the music for the Broadway hit “Kinky Boots,” which won her a Tony Award for Best Original Score.
She made history as the first woman to win a Tony solo in that category, and the musical also earned five other Tony Awards, including Best New Musical.
In an interview with the American Academy of Dermatology, Lauper spoke about her battle with psoriasis and her efforts to raise awareness.
She shared that she manages stress with a holistic approach, including reiki, meditation, yoga, and walks in nature.
Lauper continues to inspire with her resilience and creativity, and we wish her ongoing strength and good health.
