Mark Wahlberg, a famous actor and devout Catholic, is known for his vocal expression of faith. He proudly displays an ash cross on his forehead at the start of Lent, signifying his commitment to this sacred season.
However, Wahlberg chooses to keep his personal relationship with God private. In a recent interview with co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, the 51-year-old actor spoke about faith and maintaining balance.
“It’s a delicate balance for me,” Wahlberg remarked. “I never want to impose my beliefs on anyone, and I try to avoid doing so. That would be a greater offense.”
He acknowledged that while this attitude isn’t common in his profession, he feels compelled to share his views. “I can’t hide my beliefs. It’s important to respect and appreciate others’ diverse backgrounds and faiths. After all, I have friends from various walks of life and religions.”
Regarding his four children with his wife, Rhea Durham, Wahlberg believes in sharing his faith without imposing it. “I don’t force it on them,” he stated. “But they know that I start each day with prayer, Scripture reading, and Mass.”
He wants his children to see the positive impact his faith has on him, thinking, “If it works for Dad, maybe it will work for us.”
During his conversation with Savannah, Wahlberg discussed his Lenten practices and the significance of fasting. He mentioned his role as a guest narrator and advocate for the Catholic prayer app Hallow.
“It’s essential to understand that fasting is about more than just giving up food, especially for those with eating disorders,” Wahlberg explained. “God knows what we need to let go of.”
He continued, “We’ve all done things that make us feel less than our best and burdened with guilt. Fasting helps us break free from bad habits and focus on cultivating good ones. However, fasting has its challenges. For instance, I won’t be eating meat today, and I’ll continue this every Friday until Good Friday, when I’ll have just one meal.”
Wahlberg will also share insights on fasting as part of the Pray40 Lent Challenge on the Hallow app, offering guidance and encouragement.
He believes the discipline practiced during Lent inspires people to become better versions of themselves. Throughout his life, he has witnessed its transformative effects.
“Discipline has always been crucial in my life,” he noted. “When I transitioned from music to acting, I realized I needed more discipline. This discipline has enhanced my life in many ways, and I’m excited to share it with others.
These practices are essential, whether it’s fasting, exercising, reducing distractions, or dedicating more time to prayer and meditation.”
When asked to sum up his religious beliefs, Wahlberg responded passionately, “It means everything to me.” He added, “My faith has opened countless doors for me. God didn’t come to save just the righteous but to redeem the guilty. By prioritizing my faith, I embarked on a journey of self-improvement, which we all strive for.”
Mark Wahlberg’s steadfast commitment to his Catholic faith serves as an inspiration to many. Through his actions and words, he encourages others to explore their spirituality and find solace in their deep connection with a higher power.
