Essex native Ché Chesterman left his job as a supermarket shelf stacker at just eighteen to pursue a career in singing, eventually competing in the twelfth season of the X Factor. Although he didn’t win, his participation on the show marked the beginning of a successful career as a singer-songwriter. Today, Chesterman has amassed 100,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram and maintains a busy schedule of performances across the UK and beyond.
Before his 2015 audition, Chesterman admitted to being “very, very nervous,” but he appeared confident and ready to perform when he stepped onto the stage. He introduced himself and expressed his desire to bring back classic soul music, inspired by artists like Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder.
However, in a surprising turn, Simon Cowell interrupted him mid-song and asked him to perform something different when Chesterman announced he was going to sing a Sam Smith track.
Chesterman, though initially surprised, agreed and instead performed Jessie J’s “Who You Are.” As his unique, passionate voice filled the room, the judges were visibly stunned by his extraordinary vocal range and control. His impressive audition secured his spot on the show, where he ultimately finished in third place.
During his time on the X Factor, Chesterman delivered a powerful rendition of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” aiming to reach the finals. His emotionally charged performance, highlighted by his stunning vibrato, earned him a standing ovation from judge Nick Grimshaw.
Though he didn’t win the X Factor, Chesterman’s decision to compete changed his life for the better. His journey from his 2015 audition to his thriving career today is both inspiring and motivating.
