It is with deep sorrow that we share the sad news…

We are saddened to announce the passing of Michel de Grece, King Charles’ uncle, at the age of 85, marking the end of an era in European royalty.

Michel de Grece, a respected historian and author, passed away on July 28 in an Athens hospital, as reported by the Greek newspaper Ekathimerini.

Known as Prince Michael, he was the last surviving grandson of King George I of Greece and a close relative of the British royal family.

Michel, the first cousin of the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and uncle to King Charles III, made headlines in 1965 when he renounced his royal rights to marry artist Marina Karella.

They had two daughters, Princess Alexandra and Princess Olga, and five grandchildren.

Despite political upheaval in Greece, Michel remained loyal to his homeland. His deep connection to Greece shaped his work as a historian, leading him to write extensively on Greek history, the Ottoman Empire, and European royalty.

Michel shared glimpses of his life on Instagram, reflecting on family, history, and his love for discovery. He expressed empathy for King Charles’ challenges while affirming his contentment with his own life choices.

Michel’s passing closes a significant chapter in European history, but his legacy endures through his influential writings and personal choices.
