An elderly couple in their seventies visited a lawyer to file for divorce. Initially surprised, the lawyer soon understood their story.
For 40 years, they had argued without resolving their differences, staying together only for the sake of their children.
Now that their children were grown with families of their own, the couple felt there was no reason to remain together and sought to live the rest of their lives free from the pain they’d endured.
As the lawyer processed their divorce, he couldn’t grasp why they insisted on separating.
The wife, while signing the papers, told her husband, “I can’t go on, even though I love you,” and apologized. The husband responded, “I understand.” The lawyer invited them to dinner, hoping to help them reconsider.
At the restaurant, a tense silence prevailed, and they ordered roast chicken. The husband offered his wife the thigh, thinking it was her favorite part.
This gesture triggered the wife’s frustration, as she replied, “This is exactly the problem. You never considered my feelings. I hate thighs.” Unbeknownst to her, the husband had always believed the thigh was her favorite, thinking he was being thoughtful.
That night, neither of them could sleep. The husband, fearing a life without her, wanted to call and express his love.
The wife, equally sad, let the phone ring, assuming there was no point in talking anymore.
What she didn’t know was that her husband had a heart condition.
The next day, she discovered he had passed away from a heart attack while trying to reach her, still holding the phone in his hand.
