Breaking into the music industry is often a long, tough journey for most artists. Many spend years trying to make a name for themselves. However, for some, success comes quickly and unexpectedly.
Seal is one of those fortunate few. The British singer shot to fame even before his debut album was released and has remained in the spotlight ever since. While he is known for his music and his marriage to Heidi Klum, Seal’s path to fame had a surprising start, as music wasn’t his initial focus.
In addition to his voice, Seal is also recognized for the distinctive scars on his face. These scars are a result of discoid lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the skin.
Seal was diagnosed at 21, and the disease left him with coin-shaped scars on his face. Although lupus can affect various organs, Seal’s form primarily impacts the skin. He has since embraced the condition, viewing it as something that has made him easily recognizable.
Initially, Seal felt self-conscious about his scars, but he eventually realized that they don’t define who he is. He even considers himself fortunate compared to others with more severe forms of the disease.
Beyond the physical scars, Seal has faced mental health challenges, including decades-long struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. His first major panic attack happened in a recording studio, and he initially thought it was a heart attack.
Seal now manages his anxiety through exercise and other strategies and openly encourages others to seek help. He believes there’s no shame in talking about mental health and stresses the importance of reaching out for support, whether through therapy or friends.
