Few things are more important than ensuring the safety and security of ourselves and our loved ones. Most people naturally strive to avoid danger, especially in their own homes, which have historically been our havens of protection.

So, when burglaries happen, it’s deeply unsettling. The thought of someone breaking in, invading our personal space, and taking our possessions is disturbing. Many of us can relate, which is why I feel it’s essential to share a warning about a tactic some criminals use to target unsuspecting homeowners. Interested to learn more?

Home security is a priority for most. Many people invest in guard dogs, security cameras, and other measures to deter crime. However, as history shows, criminals often find ways to bypass these defenses.

Just two weeks ago, I heard a loud, forceful knock at my front door. It was far from a typical knock, more like urgent pounding. A few years ago, a Texas woman, Kim Fleming Cernigliaro, encountered this during an alleged break-in attempt. Afterward, she posted a chilling warning on Facebook.

In her story, Kim described how she found a rubber band around her door handle—placed there to keep the door open once the latch was unlocked. She called her husband, who advised her to take precautions.

According to Kim, local authorities confirmed this tactic was becoming more common. She now urges others to be careful and stay vigilant.
