Fifty years ago, they faced hate mail for their love, but check out how they look today!

Leslie Uggams has enjoyed an incredible career in theater and film. While her seven-decade journey is impressive, she’s perhaps most recognized today for her role in the *Deadpool* movies.

However, her life off-screen—particularly her groundbreaking interracial marriage to Australian Grahame Pratt in 1965—could inspire its own film.

Starting at age 10, Leslie recorded a song for MGM, with guidance from her aunt, soprano Eloise Uggams, who recommended prestigious schools like Juilliard and New York’s Professional Children’s School. Her early success continued, and in 1969, she became the first Black host of a network variety show since Nat King Cole.

Behind the scenes, Leslie met Grahame, first as classmates in New York and then during her tour in Australia. Despite facing societal pressures, Leslie and Grahame developed a deep connection. Leslie knew dating a white man carried risks, but after their engagement, he traveled to New York to be with her.

While living in New York, they faced some hate mail, but Leslie notes that Grahame’s Australian background helped him fit in smoothly. He embraced her world without the racial tensions typical in America at the time.

The couple welcomed two daughters, and Grahame took on the role of Leslie’s manager. Leslie’s career flourished as she starred in *Roots*, *Backstairs at the White House*, and *All My Children*.

Now, over 55 years into their marriage with a granddaughter, Leslie and Grahame remain close. Their journey has endured challenges, but their commitment to each other and mutual support have allowed their love to thrive against all odds.
