Every expectant mother hopes for a smooth pregnancy, but life often brings unexpected challenges. Despite the difficulties, mothers see only love in their babies.
For Courtney Williams Baker, that love was tested when her doctor suggested terminating her pregnancy after diagnosing her unborn daughter, Emersyn, with Down syndrome.
Instead of joy, Courtney and her partner were met with fear as her doctor recommended they reconsider continuing the pregnancy.
Refusing to give up on Emersyn, Courtney carried on, but the lack of compassion made every appointment difficult. “You never told me the truth: my child was perfect,” she later wrote in a letter to her doctor.
Two years after Emersyn’s birth, Courtney reflected on how her friend’s doctor had described her baby with Down syndrome as “perfect,” even before birth. That story filled Courtney with sorrow for what she had missed.
Emersyn, however, brought unimaginable joy and purpose to her family. “She’s touched thousands of hearts, brought us laughter, love, and a deeper understanding of true beauty.”
Courtney’s heartfelt message ended with a wish for other mothers: “I pray no one experiences what I did. Every child deserves to be celebrated as perfect, just as they are.”
