When rescuers found Shocks, a donkey on an Irish farm, his condition was dire. A rope tied tightly around his neck had severely damaged his skin, and his owner had worsened his injuries by treating the wounds with bleach.
Fortunately, Shocks was rescued and taken to a veterinary clinic before finding a safe home at a Birmingham animal shelter.
At the shelter, Shocks began helping children with developmental and psychological challenges. Among them was Amber, a two-year-old girl with cerebral palsy and a tracheotomy that left her unable to speak or make sounds.
Her parents, searching for therapy options, introduced her to the donkeys at the reserve.
Amber and Shocks formed an instant bond. The donkey’s gentle presence encouraged Amber to embrace physical activity, helping her overcome some effects of paralysis.
At three years old, after a surgery to restore her vocal cords, Amber remained silent—until a visit to Shocks changed everything. Hugging him tightly, she spoke her first words: “I love you, Shocks.”
Since then, Amber has continued to thrive, attending school and visiting Shocks regularly. Their connection demonstrates the healing power of love and companionship, proving that even the most difficult journeys can lead to hope.
