First Lady Jill Biden made a statement of political unity through her wardrobe at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
Dr. Biden arrived in a vibrant violet ensemble by Ralph Lauren, featuring a coat, gloves, and pumps.
The color choice, blending Democratic blue and Republican red, symbolized bipartisanship as she accompanied President Joe Biden to the swearing-in ceremony. Her look was completed with a pair of diamond earrings by Briony Raymond.
Throughout her years as first lady—and previously as second lady during her husband’s vice presidency—Dr. Biden has consistently championed American fashion.
From Oscar de la Renta to Vera Wang, her outfits have often carried meaningful messages. Ralph Lauren remains a favorite designer, with notable appearances including his Hamptons runway show last September.
At President Biden’s 2021 inauguration, she wore a Markarian ocean-blue tweed coat and dress to represent trust and stability. She later donned a Gabriela Hearst ivory coat and dress embroidered with federal flowers for the evening’s concert.
Reflecting on her role, Dr. Biden once said at a Smithsonian ceremony, “When I became first lady, I knew people would care more about what I wore. Sometimes, I’ve embraced that attention because my clothes could convey something important.”
