Emma Heming Willis has cleared up a common misunderstanding about her husband Bruce Willis’ health, explaining that although he has frontotemporal dementia (FTD), he does not experience the type of memory loss that many people often associate with dementia.
Bruce was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022 before doctors confirmed he had frontotemporal dementia in 2023. Emma explained that FTD is different from Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common form of dementia. While Alzheimer’s is widely linked to memory problems, people with FTD can experience different symptoms. According to Emma, Bruce still recognizes his loved ones.
The 71-year-old actor, best known for films including Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, and The Sixth Sense, stepped away from acting following his diagnosis. Since then, Emma has dedicated much of her time to raising awareness about frontotemporal dementia and supporting other families and caregivers facing the disease.
She has also spoken openly about the emotional impact of caregiving, describing it as an ongoing journey of grief. As the disease gradually changes a loved one, caregivers continue to experience new losses over time. Although she says she has learned to manage those challenges better, the emotional weight never fully disappears.
Emma also revealed that Bruce is not aware of his condition because of a symptom called anosognosia, which can prevent people with certain forms of dementia from recognizing that they are ill. She explained that this is part of the disease itself and is not the same as denial.
Bruce and Emma have two daughters together, Mabel and Evelyn. He also has three adult daughters—Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah—from his previous marriage to Demi Moore.
Earlier this year, Emma launched the Emma & Bruce Willis Fund to raise awareness of frontotemporal dementia, support caregivers, and help fund research into the disease.
