For an entire generation, the name Bruce Jenner was associated with athletic achievement.
In 1976, Jenner won the Olympic gold medal in the decathlon at the Montreal Games, setting a world record in the event. The victory turned Jenner into an American sports icon almost overnight.
The image of the muscular athlete running around the Olympic stadium with an American flag became one of the defining photographs of the era.
But behind that famous image, Jenner was living with a deeply personal struggle.
Years later, Jenner revealed that questions about gender identity had been part of her life since childhood.
During the 1980s, she began an earlier attempt at transitioning, taking hormones and undergoing procedures including facial changes, but eventually stopped and returned to living publicly as Bruce.
For decades, however, the public knew almost nothing about what was happening privately.

In 2015, after years of speculation about Jenner’s changing appearance, she spoke publicly about her transition in an interview with Diane Sawyer. She explained that she identified as a woman and was ready to finally live openly.

For Jenner, the transformation represented the public beginning of a life she had spent decades keeping private. In 2015, she legally changed her name to Caitlyn Marie and her gender designation.
