She Was America’s Sweetheart and the Queen of Romantic Comedies But She Looks Unrecognizable After So Many Surgeries…

For a generation of moviegoers, Meg Ryan was one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood.

With her blonde hair, bright blue eyes, expressive smile and unmistakable charm, she became the face of romantic comedy during the late 1980s and 1990s.

Audiences watched her fall in love on screen again and again, and her youthful appearance became inseparable from the image of the Hollywood sweetheart.

But decades later, photographs of Ryan revealed a dramatically different appearance.

Her career began with television roles before she moved into film. She appeared in *Top Gun* in 1986, but it was *When Harry Met Sally…* in 1989 that truly changed everything. Her performance as Sally Albright made her a household name and earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Then came a remarkable run of hits.

Ryan starred opposite Tom Hanks in *Sleepless in Seattle* and later *You’ve Got Mail*, while also appearing in films such as *French Kiss*, *City of Angels* and *When a Man Loves a Woman*. By the 1990s, she had become one of the defining stars of the romantic-comedy genre.

At the height of her fame, Ryan’s appearance was instantly recognizable. Her blonde hair, youthful face and animated expressions became part of the image audiences associated with Hollywood’s beloved romantic-comedy era.

Then the years passed.

Ryan gradually stepped away from the constant Hollywood spotlight. She continued acting occasionally, but her appearances became much less frequent, and she also moved into producing and directing.

Her most recent feature film as both actress and director was *What Happens Later* in 2023.

As Ryan entered her later years, her appearance naturally changed. Photographs showed a more mature version of the woman audiences remembered from the 1980s and 1990s, creating a striking contrast with the youthful star who had once dominated romantic comedies.

That contrast became especially noticeable because Ryan had remained so strongly associated with the look of her younger years.

For millions of fans, she will always be Sally Albright, Annie Reed or Kathleen Kelly—the bright, blonde-haired heroine from some of the most beloved romantic comedies of the era.

But photographs from different points in her life tell another story.

The young woman who became America’s sweetheart grew older, her appearance evolved, and the Hollywood image that audiences had known for decades slowly became part of the past.

Meg Ryan’s transformation is therefore not just about appearance. It is also the story of a superstar who went from being almost constantly visible to choosing a much quieter life away from the Hollywood spotlight.
