Elizabeth Dellapietro started her day as she normally does by letting Tilly, her 12-year-old little dog, out to relieve herself. It was just a few moments before Elizabeth arrived home that she heard Tilly’s frightening yelps of agony and wailing. An animal mauled Elizabeth Dellapietro’s little puppy as she stepped outside to check on things. She rushed into action right away to attempt to save Tilly’s life.
A rabid raccoon was grabbing her 10-pound Chihuahua mix and refusing to let go, despite being restrained by a leash. Worryingly, a local veterinarian said that this is the region’s second quick raccoon at.tack in two weeks. Dr. Linda Morrone was well aware of the gravity of the situation. “When I heard my dog cry in distress, I raced outside and grabbed a metal watering can and hit it on its back to get it off of my dog,” she said.

“Rabies is a really dangerous sickness,” said Dr. Morrone.
Fortunately, Elizabeth was able to fend off the rabid raccoon’s jaws and get her dog to the clinic for treatment. After being bitten by a rabid raccoon, Tilly suffered leg injuries and a fractured toe. Her mother is being immunized against rabies as a precaution.

The event has left her completely rattled, and she is now frightened to allow her pets out. She carries a baseball bat and must have at least four doses of rabies shots over the course of two weeks. The infected raccoon is still on the loose, which is causing widespread alarm in the neighborhood. Residents are asked to keep trash cans properly covered and to not leave food outdoors. If a raccoon is seen acting oddly, company administrator Michael Muscillo requests that people notify the police.
“If it’s displaying weird indicators, drooling, or those sorts of concerns, we’re advising neighbors to stay away and contact (police) immediately,” Muscillo said.
