Ian McKellen Recalls an Instance When This Royal Was “Rather Rude.”

Sir Ian McKellen recently shared some candid opinions about the late Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the royal family in an interview with the *Times of London.*

While recovering from a fall off a theater stage in London, the 85-year-old actor opened up about his experiences with the queen and his thoughts on Prince Harry’s memoir.

Recalling their encounters, McKellen described the late queen as “quite rude.” He remembered receiving a medal for acting when she remarked, “You’ve been doing this for an awfully long time.” When he replied, “Well, not as long as you,” he received a royal smile.

However, she then asked, “Does anyone still actually go to the theatre?” McKellen found this comment disrespectful, interpreting it as, “Does anyone care about you? Because I don’t. Now off you go!”

McKellen also suggested that by the end of her life, Queen Elizabeth II was “quite mad,” particularly in relation to Harry’s memoir, *Spare.*

He expressed support for Harry, saying, “Imagine being born into the royal family. I’ve had some public life, but these individuals are trapped. They can’t live normally. Can you imagine needing to be nice to everyone you meet?”

He praised anyone who manages to maintain their sanity in that environment, mentioning the late Duke of Edinburgh as someone who coped despite being “deeply eccentric and likely deeply unhappy.”

McKellen added that the current king appears to survive but is clearly affected by his experiences.

Regarding Harry, McKellen commented, “He might not be smart enough or have the right friends to truly help himself. However, he did have his pick of beautiful women in the world, so I hope he chose the right one.”
