Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres apologizes for past blackface appearance in comedy sketch…

Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres has apologized for wearing blackface in a comedy sketch nearly two decades ago.

In a statement to Deadline on Sunday, the I’m Still Here star, 59, addressed the resurfaced 17-year-old sketch from the Brazilian TV show Fantastico, where she portrayed a housekeeper in blackface. A representative for Torres confirmed the statement to USA TODAY on Monday.

“I deeply regret this,” Torres told Deadline. “I feel it is essential to acknowledge this openly and quickly to prevent further harm and misunderstanding.”

She explained that at the time, “despite the efforts of Black movements and organizations, the awareness of the racist history and implications of blackface had not yet become widely recognized in Brazil.”

Torres added, “Thanks to increased cultural understanding and progress over the years, it’s now undeniable in our country and worldwide that blackface is unacceptable.”

She concluded, “This is a necessary conversation we must continue to have to stop normalizing racist practices, past or present. As an artist and global citizen, I remain dedicated to fostering the vital changes needed to create a world without inequality or racism.”

Torres, one of five best actress nominees at the 2025 Oscars for her role in I’m Still Here—a best picture contender—could become the first Brazilian to win the award.

Earlier this month, she made history as the first Brazilian to win a Golden Globe for best actress in a drama film, following in the footsteps of her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated for the same Oscar category in 1999 for Central Station.

During her Golden Globe acceptance speech, Torres said, “I didn’t prepare anything because I was already so grateful,” adding, “Of course, I want to dedicate this to my mother.”
